I’m always trying to be lighter and more efficient. In doing this I noticed a trend on the clothing I own: through the years they gradually became lighter, simpler and can adapt to any occasion. I own less clothing.
Clothing to me has always been a matter of practicality. I don’t buy a clothes because they look pretty or trendy, I buy them because I need them and they are functional.
True, I own dressy clothes, like a suit or a tie, but I only wear them on very specific occasions.
Most of the clothing I own is simple, neutral, durable and functional. Because of this I can have less clothes. I can combine different outfits with less pieces since everything has simple colors that are easy to pair together.
I mentioned before that I own as many shirts and pants as I need. This means that if right now I need 10 shirts and 4 pants, then that’s what I have. Tomorrow I might need less. Or more.
The idea is to strike a balance between what you need and the pieces you buy.
Buying a very trendy coat that will only look OK if you are wearing a pair of slacks and a dark colored pair of shoes is OK but you’ll end up having to buy more because of this. However if you buy a coat that looks good, the color is natural and can be worn with dressy or casual clothes then, in my opinion, it is a better choice. A choice that allows me to have what I need while also maintaining a sense of style.
